The Haines V17R is an iconic model and well worth keeping in good shape. This one was badly in need of a new transom and the owner also asked for a couple of swim decks fitted while this work was done. We discovered that this was not the original transom and whoever had replaced it last hadn’t done the best job. This is a good example of why epoxy is the best material to use for work like this. The bonding to the hull was delaminating and letting water into the core as well as causing some serious safety concerns. As expected the plywood core was badly rotted and in some areas was a soft pulp. Fitted with a relatively large 200hp engine it was lucky the owner didn’t lose the engine! All our transoms are now done using composite board and epoxy reinforced creating a stronger than original result. The owner purchased a couple of swim platforms from Haines that we fitted to the transom, these were not for his model however we were able to make them fit. With everything back together the V17R looked the business yet again!
