This customer lost his aft hatch on his older model Mustang after tying his tubes to it. Unfortunately his boat went out of production years ago so there was no way to purchase a new one. He luckily found an owner with the same boat who agreed for him to use his hatch to duplicate in order to make a replacement. A condition was that this owner had lost one of his smaller hatches which our customer had, so a deal was struck to make two replacement hatches one for each of them. The small hatch had ripped out around the hinge mounts so this was repaired first so that the new hatch would be perfect. We buffed the old hatches and touched up any minors chips etc before applying the mould release and laying up to make the moulds. Both hatches required additional reinforcement installed for things like the gas struts, hinges and pads. The gelcoat finish needed colour matching to the old hatches to match the boat when fitted. The large hatch had curve in it across its width so the mould was reinforced with a balsa core to avoid any flattening while producing the part. Fortunately all the replacement fittings were available so fitted up without any modification. Sitting them alongside the old hatches you wouldn’t know these were replacements.
