Metal flake done in the mould was a popular feature in the older ski boats however it can create issues down the track. This older Shepirocraft ski boat was quite run down and someone had clear-coated the deck areas however it was all peeling off. The metal flake had sun damage where it had changed the colour in certain areas depending on where the sun hit it and where it was stored. We suggested to the owner to repaint the metal flake rather than trying restore it although this was not only more expensive but would change the look of the boat taking away the original look which he preferred not to do. We have done a few projects like this where we have worked with the metal flake and it generally produces a good finish despite some colouration differences in areas. The first step with this job was to sand off all the clear coat and prep any repairs that were required which were a few small chips in the blue metal flake and some repairs in the white gelcoat on the hull and the engine cover. We decided to simply refinish the entire top of the engine cover with some repairs in the blue metal flake below this. We ordered some blue metal flake colour matched only online from a photo but we found that this was quite close. Following the metal flake being clear-coated, we polished the entire boat above the spray chine. To finish everything off we fitted a new black gunnel rubber wrapping around the transom. There were a few other smaller jobs requested such as re mounting the ignition switch assembly and refurbishing the windscreen which included fitting a centre support strut onto the dashboard. All in all we were pleased with how this old ski boat came up and she is ready for more years on the water!
