This engine replacement was done on the water which is always more challenging than when on the hard. An oyster punt was used with a small crane, then attached to this was a chain-block for more accurate lifting. The lifting in and out was quite simple however pulling the engine in and out of the engine bay below the cockpit floor was a more time-consuming job. The engine to be replaced was a 28hp Sole diesel and after investigation a Vetus 33hp was a very close match in size, weight and torque. Both engines were a Mitsubishi base which made the exchange much easier with the shaft coupling and front pulley mounts identical. Vetus are a well thought of brand with good backing. Some upgrades were done during this process, such as a new exhaust system, fitment of a sea strainer and a new fuel filter. We also replaced the old steel engine beds which were badly rusted with new composite beds glassed in place with epoxy. Before fitting the new engine the engine bay was re-flowcoated to freshen this area up.
