The Haines 600R is an iconic model and the owner of this one wanted to restore and add some mods to this fine example. We continue on from the previous post re this project. In very original condition we were mindful of keeping all the signature finishes intact. This particular boat was quite unique in that it had a factory modified engine-well to accommodate twin engines. The owner wanted to change this to a single engine which allowed space either side in the well for a couple of bait tanks. The engine well was fortunately made to be able to be removed so this was taken out for the work to be done. It also gave us better access to the hull rebuild work inside the hull. This entailed a complete start-over because not much of the hull structure was not rotted so we stripped everything out and ground the hull back for fitting the new parts. All parts for this job were done in composite and epoxy for long life and extra strength. Another mod he asked for was a custom wave-breaker also made from composite and epoxy. As always the way we found extra unplanned work such as the lower sections of the helm bulkhead which were also rotted. This was replaced with composite and refinished with the rest of the work. Special attention was given to the design of the wave-breaker to ensure it worked in with the lines of the boat. All work was colour-matched and finished in polyurethane including the transom which been replaced at some stage prior but they finished it in white but the owner requested this to be redone in the matching hull red. The floors and floorboard were painted in 2 pack nonskid for a nicer finish and a safer surface at sea. Because a new engine is being fitted and will be using NMEA 2000 the old guages were not required so we filled these all in and refinished when painting. The engine is currently being fitted and we will report back on the on-water performance when this happens.
