The acrylic will only last so long and it will show signs of degradation. Typically these are ‘crazing’ which can be seen at first at certain angles, then these will become cracks. It will show these signs on the curved sections first because this is where there is more stress on the material. At this point the only option is replacing the acrylic panels which requires the screen to be removed from the boat and then dis-assembled. The old acrylic can be used as the templates for the new panels if still intact however sometimes these need to be pieced together like a jigsaw puzzle to develop the shape for the new parts. This Quintrex was at this point and the owner had attempted to refurbish it himself but as he found out it can be quite a time consuming and challenging task. A few of the stainless screws had corroded into the aluminium frame and snapped off which is also very common. These were drilled out and removed however this left an unsightly over-sized hole. These were filled with epoxy glue and luckily the repairs were hidden under the fitting. Another thing that happens with acrylic is that it changes colour over the years becoming sometimes an ugly purple. We replaced the old acrylic with good quality grey tint panels which looked so much more modern.
