This project started with just a few small jobs to tidy this older Sunmaid 20 trailer sailer up but soon became a major restoration. The owners wanted the old weathered areas above gunnel repainted as well as the hull underside which appeared to have been soda blasted but never progressed further. The first step was to strip the boat of all fittings and see what we were dealing with. Unfortunately the original gelcoat was very deteriorated and was filled with tiny cracks. These needed a lot of time to prep and repair using epoxy filler and some glassing required in areas. The boat included built in fuel tanks below the cockpit lockers which we converted to a couple of lockers. Inside the cabin sole was rotten and we replaced this with composite and designed in some bilge areas where we fitted a low profile bilge pump. The entire interior was repainted and updated in areas such as a new electrical panel and cover boards. The owners also asked us to build some custom step boxes below the companionway to make it easier and a custom top step which covered the new keel winch. We were also asked to replace the bow and stern rails with new ones and the aft rails to be fitted with solar panels which hinged up when in use. We also updated a lot of the deck hardware including new stanchions and life-lines, deck cleats and hinges etc. With an all new electrical system the boat was fitted with a 160amp lithium battery, new Raymarine nav screen, radios and lights. The mast and boom were also stripped, repainted and mostly refitted with new rigging and components. The underside of the hull was filled and faired, primed and then painted. While up on stands we removed the swing keel and refinished this before refitting. We also arranged for the trailer to be upgraded with rollers rather than the original bunks which were point loading on the hull. When the new rails were made we had new mast supports made for when the mast is stowed as well as to aid in standing the mast. The rigger test fitted the mast and rigging prior to delivery to ensure all worked as planned. The finishing touches were a new boot-topping in matching blue and new stickers of the name, rego and also the brand on the back. The proud new owners plan to join in to the local yacht club racing events as well as some overnight stays.
